Every four-letter .com is taken. Other extensions still have short names, even ones you can say: of the 11,025 pronounceable four-letter names in each of 9 extensions, 17,004 still sell at the normal price. Here is every one.
Pronounceable here means consonant, vowel, consonant, vowel (y counts as a consonant), the shape most short brand names take: 11,025 names per extension. Taken counts registered names, with or without nameservers, and names the registry reserves and does not sell.

“First year from” is the cheaper of Name.com and Namecheap for a normal-price name in that extension today, the same comparison the finder makes. Premium names cost more and are priced one by one; where no name sells at the normal price, the cell shows the cheapest premium one.

Drop the rule that a name be sayable and far more is free outside .com. On October 23, 2026 all but 3 of the 456,976 four-letter .coms were registered; random samples of 5,000 four-letter names elsewhere found .net 47.2%, .org 43.8%, .io 13.7%, .co 10.6%, .ai 12.0% registered. Most of the free ones are strings like xqzv, which suit short links more than brands. The short-name study has the counts for three, four and five letters.
On October 25, 2026 each of the 99,225 names was looked up at its extension’s own nameservers. A name with nameservers is registered. A name without them can still be registered (on hold) or reserved by the registry, so every one of those was checked at Name.com, which reports such names as unavailable and prices premium names one by one; a name answered unavailable was asked a second time before it counted. Letters a to z only. Names get registered every day, so each one opens a live check before you buy.

Shorter or longer: every pronounceable five-letter .com and every three-letter .io still free, three-letter names still at the normal price, or where two-letter names are still sold. For a name that fits an idea, the finder suggests names and checks them across hundreds of extensions.
