Are all 3, 4 and 5-letter .com domains taken?

Three and four letters: yes. We asked the .com registry about all 474,552 of them, and not one can be registered today. Five letters: no. Only about 24.2% are registered, but the free ones are mostly hard to say, and 75.8% of the pronounceable ones are taken.

The answers

Are all 3-letter .com domains taken?
Yes. We looked up every three-letter .com on October 23, 2026: all 17,576 are registered. 39 of them have no nameservers (held by the registry or the registrar), so a plain DNS lookup shows them as free when they are not.
Are all 4-letter .com domains taken?
Yes. We looked up all 456,976 four-letter .coms on October 23, 2026: 456,973 of 456,976 are registered, and the other 3 cannot be registered either. The last public count we found, WhoAPI’s check in December 2013, found every one registered too. The 3 nobody holds: gnso.com (ICANN's Generic Names Supporting Organization), iesg.com (the Internet Engineering Steering Group) and imso.com (the International Mobile Satellite Organization). Name.com reports all of them unavailable, so there is no four-letter .com left to register. 153,666 of the registered ones (33.6%) point at a domain marketplace’s nameservers, which usually means they are offered for sale.
Are all 5-letter .com domains taken?
No, most are still free. In a random sample of 20,000 five-letter .coms, 24.2% are registered: about 2.9 million of the 11,881,376 possible. (95% interval 23.6% to 24.8%.) Most of the free ones are hard to say: 86% have at most one vowel or three consonants in a row. Of 40 unregistered ones we checked at Name.com, 40 could be registered at the standard price.
Are pronounceable 5-letter .com domains still available?
Most are taken, but not all. Of 10,000 random pronounceable five-letter names (built consonant, vowel, consonant, vowel, consonant), 75.8% are registered as .com. That leaves about 56,000 of the 231,525 names of that shape unregistered. Of 40 unregistered ones we checked at Name.com, 40 could be registered at the standard price. Free at the standard price when we checked: caqir.com, caxih.com, cijiv.com, fevih.com, fexeh.com, hixeh.com, hukof.com, jaquv.com. Each link re-checks the name live.
Are 3-letter .net, .org, .io, .co and .ai domains taken?
We checked every three-letter name in each of them too.
  • .net17,574 of 17,576 are registered, and the other 2 cannot be registered either.
  • .org17,574 of 17,576 are registered, and the other 2 cannot be registered either.
  • .io17,125 of 17,576 have nameservers. Of 200 names without nameservers we checked at Name.com, 47 could be registered at the standard price, 153 not at all. For example: cqj.io, dqk.io, eyf.io, gqw.io.
  • .co15,391 of 17,576 are registered, and 2,185 are not. Of 200 unregistered ones we checked at Name.com, 0 could be registered at the standard price, 172 only as premium names (median $7,000), 28 not at all.
  • .ai17,304 of 17,576 have nameservers. Of 200 names without nameservers we checked at Name.com, 0 could be registered at the standard price, 200 not at all.

Four and five letters open up quickly outside .com: the table below has every extension.

Every length and extension

“All” rows checked every possible name; the others are random samples, so their share is an estimate. Letters a to z only, no digits or hyphens.

“Registered” counts names with nameservers plus names the registry’s RDAP record shows as registered without them. “On sale nameservers” is the share of checked names whose nameservers belong to a domain marketplace (Afternic, Sedo, Atom, Dan, HugeDomains and others). The last column is a live Name.com check of unregistered names: every one for full rows (a random 200 where there were more), up to 40 for samples; the rest were premium-priced or could not be registered there. The .io and .ai registry refused our RDAP lookups, so for those two “registered” means “has nameservers”, a lower bound, and the Name.com check shows what the names without nameservers are.

If you want a short name

A three- or four-letter .com is a purchase from its owner, not a registration. Five letters is the shortest length where free names still exist in .com, but the ones that are easy to say are mostly gone: 75.8% of pronounceable five-letter .coms are registered, against 24.2% of random ones. Outside .com, short names are far more open, though many of the free ones are premium-priced. Two-word names are the opposite of scarce: our extension study found most of them free in every extension except .com.

The finder checks a name across hundreds of extensions at once, with first-year and renewal prices, and its search options can cap the length of the name.

How it was measured

On October 23, 2026 we sent one non-recursive query per name to each extension’s own authoritative nameservers: a name the registry delegates is registered. Every three-letter name was checked in all six extensions and every four-letter name in .com; the other rows are seeded random samples (20,000 five-letter .coms, 10,000 pronounceable ones built consonant, vowel, consonant, vowel, consonant, and 5,000 per row elsewhere). Random 16-letter control names had to come back as nonexistent in every extension, so no registry answered for names that do not exist.

A registered name can have no nameservers (on hold, or parked without DNS), and DNS then shows it as free. So every name without nameservers in the full rows, and up to 150 per sample, was looked up in the registry’s RDAP record; samples are corrected by the share found registered that way. The .io and .ai registry refused those lookups, so its rows count names with nameservers only. Unregistered names were then priced live at Name.com, the finder’s own source.

Limits

Registrations change daily, so this is one day’s snapshot. Sample shares carry the 95% intervals in the CSV. Names with digits or hyphens are not counted. “On sale nameservers” misses names listed for sale on their own pages and counts some parked names that are not really for sale.
